With the withdrawal of British troops and the discovery
of gold in Australia, the early colonial governments
were required to raise Police Forces to protect the
growing number of immigrants to Australia and (of
course) to ensure tax's were paid and fines issued
for raising money. Troopers and the 'Traps' were not
a favoured member of colonial society but seen as
a necessary evil. However some of the early Police
displayed valor in the face of ruthless criminals,
such as police actions against Ned Kelly, whilst often
paid a pittance for their endeavours. Aboriginals
were recruited as members of some of the colonial
Police Forces and some times had to fight their own
people as in the battle Kalkadoon (Queensland) in
1884. |
