COLONIAL POLICE
Between the arrival of the First Fleet in 1789 and the end of the 19th century Australia was the temporary home for a quarter of the line regiments of the British Army. The red coat was the familiar sight of the great British Empire, whether it was guarding convicts or fighting renegade Aboriginals and bush rangers. Local's were also recruited to join the Army and the infamous New South Wales Corp was raised from local volunteers. The brave men of the British Army Regiments meant safety and security for both convicts and free men alike. Some times discharged members of the Regiments stayed on in Australia and contributed to the growth of the Australian economy or joining the colonial Police Forces.
