Often referred to the "Forgotten War' was a conflict that saw Australian troops fighting in the fozen lands of Korea. In 1950 troops of the Communist North Korean Army invaded South Korea. The United Nations security council authorised force in expelling North Korean troops from South Korea. Australia was one of twenty one nations that provided support of South Korea. Just 5 years after the end of World War Two Australians again were forced into battle. The Royal Australian Regiment was born which continues to this day to be Australia's premier combat element. It is only now that the sacrifices of Australian troops has been recognised with the dedication of a memorial in Canberra the nation's capital.

In 1962 Australia sent Military 'advisers' to South Vietnam, this was the commencment of the longest committment of Australian military personnel to an area of conflict. By the time Australia pull out the last of the troops in 1972 over 50,000 servicemen and women served in South Vietnam. A total of 496 Australians lost their lives. This conflict was one fought by both regular and conscript soldiers which to this day is still controversial. This was the first war that was brought daily into the homes of civillians and showed war in all it's horror.
