Before Federation in 1901 the States of Australia
were required to maintain their own individual defence.
This lead to the formation of many different Military
Units, some were professional and were led by ex members
or personnel on loan from the British Army & Navy
or in some cases these Units were basically private
army's whose Commanding Officer only qualification
was that he was a person of some kind of importance
within the community. These volunteer's however were
ready to fight to protect their State from any threat
and willing to to assist when there were arms to be
borne for the Mother Country. Early volunteers ran
to the colours and saw service in New Zealand as red
Coated regulars, as green or grey jacketed Rifle Volunteers,s
blue coated gunners, in the Navy's blue in China and
the dusty anonymity of khaki in the Sudan. |
